The First class is primarily demonstration and some cuttlebone prep.
• Cuttlebone*: 8” to 10” size at least 2 (they are very fragile and easy to break)
• semi stiff small paint brush for dusting
• Mask (optional-but recommended)
• small can of pressurized air (as used for cleaning computers)
• Sharp tools for scraping designs ( wax working tools work well)
• Pocket knife
• 3 sheets of course grit sanding paper #220
• 3-5 ounces of sterling silver (scrap metal without any solder on it) or sterling silver casting grain
• Students may bring other types of metal: gold, argentium and other metal alloys (again without solder on it)
• 1 Ceramic crucible (melting dish)**
• 1 Crucible handle***
• Your choice of flex shaft burs
• Small objects to press into cuttlebone
• Soldering supplies (including solder for your choice of metal)
• plan a rough design ahead of time that you will use the textured cast metal (cuttlebone texture)
• Bring the appropriate assortment of metal (sheet, wire, etc). If you aren’t certain about the design, bring a larger assortment of materials.
• bring your own metalsmithing tools
*The school will have a limited number of pieces of cuttlebone on hand for purchase @ $5.00 each. If you are interested please bring cash.
**Each student will need a Ceramic Crucible (melting dish) for each type of metal that the student melts. Each student will also need a handle for whatever type of crucible that they use. Depending on the style of melting dish, each student will need either the handle with the adjustable cinch or a pair of tongs to hold the crucible.
***CCA will have some crucibles with handles available for rent for students using Sterling Silver on a first come, first serve basis. Rental fee is $5/each (please bring cash).
